Update: You guys may notice that things look a little different around here! We just rolled out a new site design. I am so excited about. Thank you for those of you who dealt with a few hiccups that we had yesterday when it launched, but I think it was worth it! Leave me a comment and let me know what you think!
I know it’s cheesy, but how do you pass up going to Pisa and “propping up” the Leaning Tower? We reluctantly left Florence, only really leaving because we knew the sunny coast side was waiting for us! On our way I couldn’t resist stopping in the little town of Pisa. (Confession: It brought back childhood memories of the leaning tower of cheesa from A Goofy Movie. Anyone else???) It was totally worth it. We couldn’t stop laughing the whole time. It was fun to enjoy the sunshine and take silly photos.
Before hitting the road again we ducked into a little cafe for a cappuccino and a cannoli. We enjoyed our coffee standing at the bar like all of the locals before they dashed off to work and got the cannoli wrapped in paper to go. If we had stayed and enjoyed our cannoli right there, I would have asked for an entire suitcase of them to go. No joking, that cafe that I expected to be mediocre, had some of the best coffee and easily the best cannoli I had in all of Italy. It was such a great little stop, that I think I learned my lesson. No more making assumptions!
Our drive there took us through the gorgeous Tuscany countryside. Everywhere we looked there were stunning red roofed homes dotting the rich landscape. The hills rolled on until we arrived at the Dolomites, the Italian Alps. They were an imposing, dramatic force rising over the whole valley. We even pulled over on the side of the road just to admire the view for awhile.
When we arrived in Pisa, I parked our car in what I assumed was a parking spot (I did a lot of that…I guess it was more hoping than assuming!) We wandered through town looking for the tower. I was surprised to see a lot of graffiti and high security walls. Many houses even had gates with security cameras. It made me wonder what goes on in this town! Luckily, we soon heard the clip clop of a horse and carriage. That could only mean one thing, tourist rides! We knew we had to be getting close! Then all of a sudden, there it was peeking out over buildings!
When we came around the corner to see the tower, I was completely taken aback. The Tower of Pisa was almost completely dwarfed by a huge cathedral! I’ve seen a million pictures of the Leaning Tower of Pisa and I had no idea that there was anything around it. I assumed that it was a tall lookout tower on its own!
Just taking a little rest!
Don’t worry guys, I’ve got it!
