Traveling down Highway 1 is one of the most gorgeous drives in the country. It takes you from the rugged coastline in Mendocino in Northern California, cuts through San Francisco, continues down through Monterrey, Carmel, Santa Barbara, cuts through LA & Orange Counties (where everyone knows it as PCH, Pacific Coast Highway) and ends at the picturesque beaches of Dana Point. Everyone should have the chance to do that drive at least once, and those of us who have had to use the road for commuting should do it every once in awhile to remember its significance. Along that road are more picturesque stops and great little towns than I can count. One must see is Pigeon Point Lighthouse. The lighthouse is not open to the public. It is structurally unsound and has not had the money to be maintained for quite awhile. It’s crumbling isolation make it such a unique spot to stop.
Even though you can’t climb up to the top of the lighthouse, there is a nice exhibit open to explain the history of Pigeon Point lighthouse and house the fernel light while they try to raise money to restore the lighthouse. The view is absolutely spectacular. I really hope that they are able to restore the lighthouse one day. This really is a beautiful spot on the coast.
If you are driving down Highway 1, you can keep a look out for the stop, just after you pass the exit for Pescadero or you can GPS to the Pigeon Point Hostel. Its a small hostel, right next to the lighthouse at 210 Pigeon Point Rd, Pescadero, CA 94060. After attempting to find it many other ways & driving up and down the road, this worked best for us!
Mom, Ben, & I stopped at Pigeon Point Lighthouse after touring Harley Farms & learning how to make goat cheese. Stop by later in the day for the best views. This whole area whole blanketed in fog when we drove in, making the lighthouse seem extra needed!
As we watched the birds soar over the sea, we spotted a little seal happily swimming away!
He liked to surf the waves!
Upon closer inspection, we saw that he had a friend!
Just keep swimming, just keep swimming!
Soaking in the sunshine!
