Plan ahead, June is lavender month in Sonoma wine country. Everyone likes to visit Napa during harvest season in the fall and I’ll admit, it’s pretty incredible BUT it’s so crowded! One of my favorite things about living so close to Napa and Sonoma is our ability to go up for an afternoon when the crowds have died down. Lavender season is so beautiful in a different set of colors and you get half of the crowds. The best part is that the wineries are ablaze of color and the lavender fields, which are only open once a year, are open with a sort of festival feeling. Have you had lavender lemonade? Yum! Check in with Sonoma County to find all of the lavender activities going on this year or look up Harms Vineyards & Lavender Fields, where we went in Napa.
It was such an adventure trying to find this place. Our gps took us down the wrong road to someone’s private home. They were in the driveway and were nice enough to give us directions. Then even with their directions, we still couldn’t really find it! Finally we said screw it and just parked on the side of the road where there were a lot of other cars and started to follow people down a dirt road. Once we were out of the car, we spotted some hand written signs. This lavender field is only open one weekend of the year so there was nothing really official!
After stocking up on lavender and having our fill of lavender lemonade, it was high time for some lunch! We headed over to the well known Oakville Grocery. Only in Napa do grocery stores look like this! It is a wine country picnicer’s dream! There are tons of deli salads, meats, cheeses, and the yummiest of sandwiches to chose from. If you didn’t get enough wine from the wineries, they have a huge selection of local bottles. There is even an espresso bar in case you need a pick me up before heading out for more tastings.
Sangria made with local wine & fruits? Yes, please!
Bring back all of the pantry items that you could dream of to recreate wine country goodness in your own kitchen!
We took our spoils out to the shady tables & happily dug in!
This was a scrumptious Cuban sandwich!
