One of the German towns on my bucket list is the tiny, walled city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Photos of it have filled my Pinterest pages for years, so when I saw that it was a short drive away from where we would be staying in Germany, I added it to the very top of my to do list! If you haven’t heard of it, I’ll be sharing more next week, but before Christmas is too far behind us, I wanted to share the cutest German Christmas Museum, the first of it’s kind, located in the heart of this old city.

Following GPS around my friend and I got distracted walking through the main square and missed the shop. As we returned looking for it, I spotted this red car loaded up with presents and knew that was it!

As you walk in, there are two parts….the Christmas store and the Christmas museum. The Christmas museum’s hours vary, but it is usually open from 10am-3:30pm and costs 4 Euros. The shop itself is much more impressive. This is the site that greets you as you move through the store. Let me further impress you by saying that this tree rotates. That’s right, IT ROTATES! It’s 16 feet tall, decorated with over 1,000 glass balls and 12,500 lights. This place takes up 16,000 square feet, has over 3 miles of garland, and 122,000 lights.

“Items of almost every type of traditional German Christmas like Pyramids, Nutcrackers, Incense Smokers, Schwibbogen, Ornaments of Glass, Wood and Pewter, and Table Linens” are on display. I wanted to take home one of each of these nutcrackers!

Finally, we decided that we’d better pop into the museum! They show “not only unusual and rare Christmas decorations from the 19th and the early 20th centuries but also “favorites” on the Christmas Tree, decorations which may have been in existence for over 100 years but have not lost any of their original popularity.”

We started with Christmas trees through the ages. I love this simple one decorate with fruit and real candles. I know how brittle my tree gets after a little while. I can’t imagine having fire anywhere near it! You’d have to be so careful! Look at how ornate they get through the years.

The next part of the museum had ornaments, tree stands, Santas, and Christmas cards.

At the very end, there was a Christmas tree where you could add your own ornaments. It was fun to see where all of the various visitors were from. We of course added ours to the tree!
