For our first summer road trip of our July series, I bring you the Francis Ford Coppola Winery! Hopefully you caught my post on Monday for some 4th of July Homemade Whipped Cream and Berries and introduction to a summer series of my favorite easy Southern style BBQ Baked Beans, Orange Marinated Steak with Buttered Mushrooms, Grilled Lemon Asparagus, and Sweet Tea Sweetie Summer Sweet Tea recipe! Each week I will also be highlighting some great summer road trip locations on each side of the coast. Heading into wine country is up first!
The Francis Ford Coppola Winery is one of my favorites in Sonoma County. Head up through wine country to just beyond Healdsburg (an adorable little town…more on that later!). When you exit the freeway you will see that Francis Ford Coppola Winery has their own road winding through gorgeous vineyards and ending at a very imposing building that is a cross between a French chateau and something off of a movie set.
Francis Ford Coppola is not only an established wine maker, he is more frequently known for being the director of many movies including the Godfather and Apocalypse Now. The tasting room at the Coppola winery is full of movie memorabilia from the Coppola movies. You can see the famous Don Corleone’s desk from The Godfather, the original automobile from Tucker: The Man and His Dream, the ship from Marie Antoinette, and several Academy Awards.
I was surprised to find a pool and poolside bar and cafe right in the middle of this beautiful winery! If you are lucky, you can rent a cabine. Its a little changing room that comes with lounge chairs. Those go to wine club members first, so I have yet to snag one, but walk ins to swim and lounge on the grass are also accepted. The pool is absolutely beautiful. Near the pool there is also an outdoor amphitheater area, a tepee reading room for kids, and bocce courts. During warm summer evenings you can attend to watch the performances.
The wine tasting bar upstairs is stunning and the little shop is equally exciting. There were so many unique items that you just can’t find anywhere else.
