Have I mentioned how gorgeous the Bay Area is? There is so much to do. This summer I recommend jumping on the ferry and heading out to Angel Island. All of the San Francisco Bay glory goes to Alcatraz, but just beyond Alcatraz is another gem, Angel Island. It is one of my favorite state parks!

If you make it a day trip (which I recommend) then there are two options for lunch. There is a yummy cafe with an outdoor patio and bar. Its so relaxing to sit on the patio and watch the boats in the harbor. The food is really good. You can also pack a picnic. There are tons of picnic tables and charcoal grills in the harbor area as well as scattered around the island.

To get to Angel Island, take the ferry there from San Francisco, Sausalito, or Tiburon. We’ve done both San Francisco and Tiburon, but I prefer Tiburon. The San Francisco ferry departs from the busy Fisherman’s Wharf area, which is an area that I usually try to avoid during tourist season, whereas leaving from adorable downtown Tiburon means an excuse to try picturesque restaurants on the water. Honestly, either is a great option. The ferry ride over gives you gorgeous views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. You can camp overnight if you want, but a day trip was plenty for me! Rent-able bikes are available at the shop right at the harbor, or you can chose tram tours, Segway tours, and electric scooter tours to help you see the island. You also have the option of bringing your own bikes with you on the ferry. I’ve spent time on Angel Island both on Segways and on bikes. Segways are crazy, goofy fun, but bikes do give you more freedom.   Once on Angel Island, there is a paved road that runs around the outside of the island and hiking trails that run through the interior. The island is full of eroding old buildings from the different eras of the island. It is haunting to see. There are plaques describing the history of the buildings, but I recommend taking one of the tours to really get a feel for the island.Angel Island, CA | www.sweetteasweetie.com
